We here at the John Cleary Gallery are excitedly looking forward to our 2011/12 season and during these slower summer hours are taking the opportunity to renovate and paint in anticipation.  As such, following is the updated schedule through September.

With these changes we are also looking forward to some great things happening here in the next couple of months:

 

The response to our recent announcement of the upcoming release of Mitch Dobrowner’s book in conjunction with 21st Editions has been overwhelming!  As a reminder, many of 21st Edition's books sell out before the book is even available, so please reserve your copy as soon as possible, along with your print choice.  The book will be shipped in mid-September.

 

Our 2011/12 season will officially begin on Saturday, September 17th with the opening of Jeri Eisenberg: Bokeh, with an opening reception with the artist from 6-8pm.

Catherine will also once again return to the Fall 2011 Affordable Art Fair in New York, NY Wednesday, September 21 through Sunday the 25th.  For more information on free tickets or if you have particular photographs you would like to see, please contact the gallery.

New Mitch Dobrowner Book

We at John Cleary Gallery are so excited to announce the publication of Mitch Dobrowner's new book by 21st Editions:

This represents the first publication by Dobrowner and is sure to be as well designed and printed as the rest of the books by this fine publisher.  Limited to 280 copies with only 200 for sale, the book is 144 pages, includes 64 full bleed duotone images, and measures 12 1/2" x 12 1/2." This book is wrapped in handmade Twinrocker paper and is accompanied by your choice of one of four signed 16" x 20" silver-gelatin contact prints. The prints were made for Mitch Dobrowner by Ted Cullen and are the only silver-gelatin prints ever offered by the artist.  The price is $750

Like a Rolling Stone

Well Happy Summer Solstice everyone!!! In order to celebrate I thought I would feature the work of one of our artists, Thomas Kellner.

Stonehenge, England

Stonehenge (the most famous of all henges, of course) is theorized by many to be a spiritual site used by ancient druids to celebrate the Winter and Summer solstices.  In fact, the only time the monument’s center is open to public access is during these two periods of the year.

German born Kellner has been using his unique photographic process to capture stunning images of monuments, buildings and interiors across the world.

After being awarded the Kodak Germany Young Professionals Prize he decided to dedicate his life to the medium of photography.

Keliy Anderson-Staley: Kickstarter Project

 

Regular blog followers will remember my first show at the John Cleary Gallery a couple of months ago with artist Keliy Anderson-Staley (or perhaps you might remember the Cookie Baking Fiasco of 2011).

Hello, Goodbye

 

The beginning of June is bringing about lots of changes here at the John Cleary Gallery.  Henry Horenstein’s Show photos have come down to make way for Mitch Dobrowner’s Storm Series.  (It’s not too late to make the opening reception with the artist tonight from 6-8 p.m.!)

You don’t have to go but you can’t stay here! (No seriously, we don’t have the storage)

 

The other big change happening is that, unfortunately, my tenure here as assistant director will come to a close at the end of tonight’s opening.  I can say without hesitation that it has been a pleasure to come into this gallery every day and be surrounded but such fascinating pieces of art. 

Weep not for me, though, because upon leaving here I will be headed on a two month tour singing the baritone solo in Brahm’s Requiem across Europe.  My blogging duties aren’t exactly ending because I may make a random post here or there whenever inspiration hits.  (Until then you can always follow my own blog here!)

So thanks for following and please say hello/goodbye if you make it to the opening tonight.

Mitch Dobrowner: New Work

Please join us Saturday, June 4, from 6 – 8 p.m. for the opening of Mitch Dobrowner: New Work. The exhibition will run through Wednesday, August 31. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception.

Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Mitch Dobrowner began his photography career the moment his father gave him an old Argus rangefinder. At the age of twenty one he quit his job and toured the American Southwest, finding inspiration in the limitlessness of the natural landscapes and the photography of artists like Ansel Adams and Minor White. It is no wonder then that Mitch’s work exudes a reverenced solemnity for the American vistas in his landscape portraits and the tumultuous elegance of the elements in his storm series.

Mitch’s photographs are on display in galleries and museums around the globe, including the Ordover Gallery at the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Photography Museum of China in Lishui, and the Photo-Eye Gallery of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Additionally, they have been featured in publications including, but not limited to, Newsweek, LensWork, and National Geographic’s 2009 Visions of Paradise.

The John Cleary Gallery is thrilled to welcome back Mitch for another exhibition since his international debut at the gallery in 2004.

Please note, as a result of the devastating string of natural disasters running rampant in the South over these last couple of weeks, a portion of the proceeds of sales of Mitch’s work will be donated to disaster relief efforts in affected areas.
