Gerald Pisarzowski: Art and Alchemy

Canadian photographer Gerald Pisarzowski has made a career of working in the art and alchemy of platinum printing. As a photographic medium, platinum prints have long been admired for their rich and delicate tonal scale and unmatched archival quality, and Pisarzowski ultimately exploits these benefits to his advantage. Fascinated with the juxtaposition of hard and soft forms, movement and scale, light and darkness, he prefers to work in areas he knows best, returning over time to get beyond the obvious and explore the more intrinsic qualities of his subjects.

In addition to his own work, Pisarzowski conducts workshops in both landscape photography and the art of platinum printing, as well as printing for a wide range of his photographic contemporaries. Though he received his education at the University of Toronto, his photographic training came through a myriad of self-taught practices and formal and informal venues, including courses at Humber College and Ryerson Institute of Technology; workshops with Fred Picker, Freeman Patterson and Elizabeth Siegfried; and private study with Paul Hoeffler.

Gerald has had a number of solo and group exhibitions in galleries in Canada and in the United States. His award winning work is included in a number of corporate and private collections as well as in the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the City of Toronto Archives.

Born in Germany, artist Renate Aller lives and works in Long Island and New York. For over a decade Aller has been photographing the Atlantic Ocean from the same point under different conditions during the day as well as at night. The result of her extensive project is exquisite oceanscapes that are reminiscent of greats such as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Mark Rothko.  Renate has received a myriad of praise for her work and excellent reviews in articles and other press.  Here is a link to some of the articles discussing her work and process.

Renate Aller’s work has been exhibited around the world in numerous countries and is held in a vast array of public and private collections.  This will be Renate Aller's first solo exhibition at John Cleary Gallery.

Mauro Fiorese Film at Discovery Green

FotoFest will be hosting a party at Discovery Green this Saturday, May 1 from 6-9 p.m. in which they project images from the biennial.  Included with be Mauro Fiorese's U.Ph.O film.  If you didn't catch this fun film at the gallery during Fotofest, be sure and see it downtown!

Fotofest So Far

Even though I'm completely and totally exhausted (and leave painfully early in the morning for New York for Aipad), I have to admit that March is a really exciting month here at John Cleary Gallery. Fotofest opened Friday, and I had a great day reviewing the artists with whom I was lucky enough to be matched. I found some work that was great (but not right for my gallery) and some work that was great (AND right for my gallery). Two artists with whom I'm friendly from Fotofests past (Catherine Cameron and Oyvind Hjelmen) asked me if I love my job. I admitted that my favorite part was looking at fine art photography all day, and Fotofest definitely fills that bill.

The best part of Fotofest for me this year is that each and every artist with whom I've met (both at The Meeting Place and at the gallery) has been completely ready for the review experience, i.e., listening to what each reviewer has to say with an open mind. One artist, Deborah Samuels is a mentee of Jeffrey Becom and his charming wife Sally Aberg. Monica Cheon, with whom I met two years ago, is still making beautiful work. Rania Matar and Natan Divir are planning to combine their series of youths into a joint project that promises to be enlightening. I could go on and on and on and on, but then you'd have no reason to come to the gallery in July for my "Found" show that will highlight all the fabulous work I've... well... found, this weekend.

Saturday was a very busy day at the gallery. I met with artists and tried to ready myself for AIPAD while Eric, Morgan, and Mauro set up the installation of Mauro Firoese's "mockumentary." I was so pleased to have a great crowd for the event that I'm going to show the work again this Saturday! If you missed it last week, be sure and get to the gallery on Saturday, March 20 from 6-8 p.m. to see the film (featuring the likes of Duane Michaels, Maggie Taylor, Jerry Ueslmann, Michael Kenna, Keith Carter, and a certain gallery owner who shall remain nameless due to her complete lack of acting ability), the Jefferson Hayman exhibition, and snag a signed book by Thomas Kellner.
