Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor on NY Times Lens Blog

Last week photographic duo extraordinaire Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor were featured in separate articles on the New York Times Lens Blog!

“Jerry Uelsmann’s Analog Dreams”

“Before Photoshop allowed image makers to bend reality to their will with a single keystroke there was Jerry Uelsmann. He created surreal images the hard way — not with digital shortcuts, but working in a darkroom with seven enlargers and multiple negatives.”                       ~James Estrin

“In Her Garden of Digital Delights”

“I use pretty minimal and simple features. I try not to get overwhelmed by the technical aspects of it. But as new features have allowed for higher quality images, that’s changed my work,. Things have become more intricate and layered and I’m braver about having many more layers in the images than I used to be. When I started out I didn’t think that I could do all of my work in Photoshop. I never really saw it as the ultimate answer to everything. But I now realize that there’s no other way I could do this kind of work. I couldn’t imagine myself using a camera and film anymore.” ~Maggie Taylor

Both Uelsmann and Taylor are featured in our currently running Deck the Walls holiday exhibition (running through January 14). For more information about purchasing one of these alluring works, contact us here at the John Cleary Gallery!

Rolfe Horn: Special Edition Print

The John Cleary Gallery is excited to announce the release of a new, special edition print by Rolfe Horn:

Special Edition print

Twelve Stars, Northern California (2011) – $400

In addition to being produced in a special limited edition of 25, Rolfe has also introduced a different size and toning method not traditionally used in his previous work, making it all the more rare.

Per the artist:

The image size is around 15 x 15 inches, printed on 16x20 paper and made on Bergger triple weight paper, rich in silver, a luster finish and has an ivory tint to the base of the paper.

The prints were then toned in gold chloride, giving a slightly bluish cast to the mid-tones and shadows, and also makes
the prints much more archival, as the silver is coated with gold.

As you can see, the glow of the moon (out of frame) is centralized at the top of the image, the ocean below is silvery with the reflected light.  As the paper is of luster finish, the scan can't quite do it justice.

It is a photo of nothingness, yet it is a scene which massages the mind into a calmer state of being.

Please note, as the print is being produced in such a limited number—and previous special edition prints by Rolfe have historically sold out in less than a month— it would be much safer to purchase “Twelve Stars” sooner rather than later.  With the holidays quickly approaching now’s the right time!

LIFE Magazine Turns 75!

Today marks the 75th anniversary of LIFE magazine being in print, and as such they have a couple of great “Best-of” lists going on at their website.  Whenever I think of LIFE it is inevitably the iconic photographs that have been produced in it's tenure that come to mind.  Lucky for you their website has created a list of the top 75 photographs from the past 75 years.  75!!!!!!

In honor of this grand achievement I thought it would be fun to cull from the John Cleary Gallery ’s very own collection of LIFE photographs, some of which are found on the best-of list.  In the instances where there is an overlap, I have copied the blurb provided on LIFE’s website.

Three Frames of Children at Puppet Theater, Paris, 1963

Alfred Eisenstaedt: Three Frames of Children at Puppet Theater, Paris, 1963

“Yes, LIFE's photographers took many classic images of the powerful, the rich, and the famous -- but Alfred Eisenstaedt's gift was making stars out of everyday people, by patiently observing and capturing them in magical moments of joy and wonder. Here, he trains his eye on a young audience at a puppet show in a Paris park: Each delightful child reacts in an extreme and distinct way to the moment when St. George slays the dragon, displaying a range of emotions -- amusement, horror, triumph, fear -- that hints at the many facets of the human experience.”

Mickey Mantle having a bad day at Yankee Stadium, 1965

John Dominis: Mickey Mantel having a bad day at Yankee Stadium, 1965

“In perhaps the greatest-ever photograph of a legendary athlete in decline, John Dominis captured New York center fielder Mickey Mantle at Yankee Stadium in June 1965, at a point in his career when alcohol, injuries, and plain old advancing age were dulling the incandescent talents of the future Hall of Famer. Here, in Dominis' photo, Mantle flings his batting helmet away in frustration after a terrible at-bat -- a gesture that, even in the twilight of his career, Mantle managed with physical grace and, somehow, a kind of flair.”

Gordon Parks: American Gothic, 1942

The Beatles, Miami Beach, 1964

John Loengard: The Beatles, Miami Beach, 1964

“In John Loengard's popular photo of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, taken during their first trip to America, the lads' famous mop tops bob undisturbed above the water's surface. The pool was quite chilly that day, thanks to a cold snap -- check out Ringo's grimace -- and Loengard has said the Beatles even began to turn blue; still, in the short minutes he had to get this shot, the photographer cleverly asked the boys to sing, and thus managed to draw out the playfulness and passion that made them so beloved.”

Horenstein shoots with a balanced uniqueness, experimenting with view, angle, and perspective. Each photograph is different, yet with a similar underlying mood. Susan Burnstine: Within Shadows

Please join us Saturday, October 22, from 6 – 8 p.m. for the opening of Susan Burnstine: Within Shadows. The exhibition will run through Saturday, November 26. The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception and book signing of her new monograph, Within Shadows.

The Last Goodbye

The Last Goodbye

Eschewing the use of traditional cameras, Susan Burnstine creates her dream-like visions entirely in-camera with one of over twenty hand-made film cameras and lenses. Though frequently unpredictable and often technically challenging, these cameras (an amalgam of plastic, vintage parts and random household objects) and their extensive limitations demand a high level of instinct and intuition—the same tools that are key when trusting in the unseen.

Burnstine, a Los Angeles base photographer, has been featured in various international publications, including B&W Magazine, Photo Magazine Romania and Rangefinder Magazine. Her work can be found in private and public collections throughout the world, most notably at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Capital Group in Los Angeles, and recently in solo exhibition at the AD Galerie in Genolier, Switzerland.

Within Shadows, Burnstine’s first monograph, was recently released in Europe at the Venice Biennale in June 2011 and arrived stateside in September 2011. The book has since gone on to win the Gold award for PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris in the Professional Fine Art Books category and a Bronze overall.
