Frank Yamrus: I Feel Lucky Book and Special Edition Print

 

Frank Yamrus' recently released I Feel Lucky has been receiving some great press as of late, most recently with a fantastic interview with At Length Magazine by Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching. (Click here for the interview)

 

In his own words, Frank describes the work thusly:

Originally inspired by the onset of my first (and hopefully last) midlife crisis, I created the I Feel Lucky collection of self-portraits between my 47th and 53rd birthdays. Initially titled Less Than or Equal to 50, this series began with a looming deadline of my 50th birthday, as if on this milestone my midlife crisis would magically resolve itself. At the time, typical midlife crisis issues — relationships, faith, career, health and mortality — were producing classic midlife crisis symptoms — moodiness, exhaustion, the desire to make change and some deafening private politics of self-identity. With my camera, my constant companion during this time, I contemplated a lifetime of choices and created present-day images to evaluate my past with the hope of glimpsing my future.

Concomitant to Frank's photographs, the book includes two essays on the collection: "The Borrowed Mirror" by W.M. Hunt and "Everyman: Frank Yamrus" by Sunil Gupta.

Additionally, we are pleased to offer a special edition of the book which includes I Feel Lucky and a limited, 5 x 7 inch print of Untitled (Sunset), as seen below:

Susan Burnstine: Special Offer and News

 

In anticipation of Photo LA this weekend (January 12 through 16, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium), Los Angeles based photographer and recent John Cleary Gallery exhibitioner, Susan Burnstine, is offering a two day only special on one of her most recent images of LA.

From January 10 through 5 pm January 12 this image will be available at the introductory, first edition rate of $1,000 (12 x 12 inches) and $1,500 (16 x 16 inches) irrespective of the traditional edition-based price point appraisal method.

 

 

Fans of Susan Burnstine in the greater Texas region will also have the chance to see her work in a new exhibition at the East Gallery of Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas from January 17 through February 15.

Additionally, Susan will be participating in a panel discussion with Mary Virginia Swanson and Kelli Connell on January 31, 2012 from 4:00-5:30pm followed by a gallery reception from 5:30-6:30pm. New Mitch Dobrowner Book

We at John Cleary Gallery are so excited to announce the publication of Mitch Dobrowner's new book by 21st Editions:

This represents the first publication by Dobrowner and is sure to be as well designed and printed as the rest of the books by this fine publisher.  Limited to 280 copies with only 200 for sale, the book is 144 pages, includes 64 full bleed duotone images, and measures 12 1/2" x 12 1/2." This book is wrapped in handmade Twinrocker paper and is accompanied by your choice of one of four signed 16" x 20" silver-gelatin contact prints. The prints were made for Mitch Dobrowner by Ted Cullen and are the only silver-gelatin prints ever offered by the artist.  The price is $750

Renate Aller: One View, Ten Years

Born in Germany, artist Renate Aller lives and works in Long Island and New York. For over a decade Aller has been photographing the Atlantic Ocean from the same point under different conditions during the day as well as at night. The result of her extensive project is exquisite oceanscapes that are reminiscent of greats such as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Mark Rothko.  Renate has received a myriad of praise for her work and excellent reviews in articles and other press.  Here is a link to some of the articles discussing her work and process.

Takeshi Shikama: Silent Respiration of Forests

 Please join us Saturday, October 23, from 6 – 8 p.m. for the opening of Takeshi Shikama: Silent Respiration of Forests. The exhibition will run through November 27, 2010.  Takeshi Shikama was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1948. After attending Aoyama Gakuin University, he pursued a career in the field of design. Shikama began photographing, and in 2002 he began to explore the forests of Japan as the subject of his photography. The product of his exploration resulted in beautifully hand-crafted platinum prints on gampi, which capture the darkly printed tones and highlights on the delicate Japanese paper.

 Shikama’s attraction to the forest began when he was building a cabin in the woods with his own hands. As he was clearing the land and chopping down the trees, sap accumulated on his ax and Shikama saw the sap as the blood of the tree. As a result Shikama began to see the forest as a living organism. He began traveling to different forests in Japan to capture the images the forest allowed him to take. He is drawn to these wooded locations because of the power Shikama feels the forests exude.

According to John D’Agostino the shards of rescued Tiffany he photographs are used not as objects in a still life but as “negatives”. The combination of good lighting and Tiffany’s favrile glass create unique and beautiful biomorphic forms printed on sheets of archival canvas.

The Signature of All Things

John D’Agostino’s work is a continuation of his ancestor’s heritage and passion for the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. John D’Agostino’s grandfather, Vito D’Agostino, was such an admirer of Tiffany’s work that during his fall from public adoration and liquidation of Tiffany’s studios, Vito saved and salvaged dozens of boxes of Tiffany pieces from destruction. In the boxes collected were scrapbooks, original designs and favrile glass, the raw material intended for Tiffany’s stained glass. What Vito D’Agostino could not salvage was thrown into the East River. His grandfather’s passion for a fading art form is to thank for John D’Agostino’s modern day photographs.

Recently, John D’Agostino’s work and the history behind it have received a number of great reviews and publicity. Hunting Grounds, 2008 was featured on the cover of Glass #119, Summer ’10 with a nicely written article about D’Agostino and his work gracing the pages of the publication. In a lecture titled The 10 Most Exciting Photographers I Learned About in the Last Year given by Rebecca Senf at the Phoenix Art Museum, John D’Agostino is mentioned along with other photographers using photography in a way that presents the world in a manner such as the world has never seen. Also this summer, ARTFORUM's Art&Education published John D'Agostino's paper The Strength to Dream: How Remnants of the Past Illustrate a Legacy of The Representation of Vision. A special edition monograph, Empire of Glass, done with the Griffin Museum of Photography was recently released in 2009. Empire of Glass is a limited edition of 25 copies of 72 pages with 32 full color plates.

International Juried Competition

For all the photographers out there, here is a great opportunity for you to participate in.

Photography Book Now is a celebration of the most creative and innovative photography books and the people behind them. Now in its third year, this international juried book competition is an opportunity for photographers of all stripes to showcase their work to a world-renowned jury panel.

How it works: Renowned experts review the entries and after a lot of coffee and discussion, they choose the grand prize winner, the top winners in each category, and first- and second-runners up in each category.

And, you – the people – get to chime in and vote on your favorites for the People’s Choice Award.

Different categories exist and different prizes are presented to the winners of the various categories. Entrants compete for a $25,000 grand prize and the opportunity to have their book housed in the permanent collections at the International Center of Photography, the Annenberg Space for Photography and the George Eastman House.
